Theoretical Training

To best prepare for the theoretical driving license exam, you can choose to self-study or take a minimum of 12 hours of classes at an accredited driving school, such as Wayez Permis. Our experienced instructors will help you acquire the necessary knowledge of the highway code and master the rules of the road.  

  • Failure: After two consecutive failures in the theoretical exam, you will be required to complete a 12-hour training course at an accredited driving school.

Theoretical Exam

Exam Procedure

The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions presented on a computer. You will have a maximum of 15 seconds to answer each question, and the total duration is approximately 30 minutes. To pass, you must score at least 41 out of 50.

During the exam, it is important to note that no personal items (pen, scrap paper, cell phone, etc.) are allowed on the table. Failure to comply with this rule may result in exclusion. A candidate caught cheating will be banned for 1 year, while a candidate disrupting the exam will be banned for 6 months.

Important Rules
  • Scoring System :
    • 1 point deducted for a mistake.
    • 5 points deducted for a mistake related to a serious offense.
    • Making mistakes on 2 serious offense questions results in failure.
Serious Offenses

Serious traffic violations of the 3rd or 4th degree include:

  • Entering a level crossing when the barriers are moving.
  • Making a U-turn on a highway.
  • Driving at night without headlights on.​
  • Not using an appropriate device to transport your child.​
  • Running a red light.
  • Entering a prohibited direction.
Special Sessions

Special theoretical exam sessions are available by appointment, including exams assisted by an interpreter in German, English, or sign language. Candidates with mental or intellectual disabilities must provide a certificate from a recognized center to participate in these sessions.

If You Pass

If you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate of success valid for 3 years. Remember that the practical exam must be completed before the certificate expires!

Practical Training

You can choose from four training pathways:

  1. Free Pathway (M36): Minimum 9 months of training with a guide. Valid for 36 months.
  2. Combination of Free Pathway and Driving School (M36): Minimum 14 hours in a driving school and 6 months of training with a guide. Valid for 36 months.
  3. Driving School with Training (M18): Minimum 20 hours in a driving school and 3 months of training (solo driving allowed). Valid for 18 months.
  4. Driving School without Training: Minimum 30 hours in a driving school, direct access to the exam. Valid for 18 months.

First Aid Training

First aid training is essential for learning how to provide initial assistance to potential victims of a traffic accident. It consists of two parts:

  1. E-learning: After passing your theory exam at a Brussels examination center, you can log in to the Red Cross online platform to complete the first part of the training remotely.
  2. In-Person Training: You will then be invited to participate in in-person training provided by the Red Cross at its training center.

Validity of Certificate: The certificate of participation in the first aid training is valid for 2 years.

Exemptions

Some individuals may qualify for an exemption from training:

  • Holders of a first aid certificate:This certificate must be less than 2 years old, consist of at least 12 hours of training, and be recognized by the SPF Employment.
  • Professionals​: First responders, paramedics, and certain healthcare professionals may also request an exemption.

To benefit from this exemption, you must submit a request using the appropriate form .

Risk Perception Test

Before you can take the practical exam, you must pass a risk perception test, which evaluates your ability to identify hazards on the road. This test takes place at an examination center.

  • Conditions: Must have completed first aid training and met the required training hours and stage.

Practical Exam

After successfully passing the risk perception test, you may present the event in public under the following conditions:

  • With your own vehicle (your guide or, if you hold a provisional license for 18 months, a person meeting the guide conditions accompanies you).
  • With the vehicle from an approved driving school (the instructor accompanies you).

In order to take the exam, it is mandatory that the theoretical exam (valid for 3 years), the certificate of participation in first aid training (valid for 2 years), and the risk perception test (valid for 1 year) are all valid..

Exam Vehicle Requirements

The vehicle used for the exam must be:

  • Technically and administratively in order.
  • Capable of performing preliminary checks and maneuvers.
  • Equipped with the “L” sign and a second interior mirror; without these, the exam will not take place.
  • Compliant with low-emission zone access criteria; any non-compliance will result in the cancellation of the exam.

Parking assistance systems, cameras, and maneuvering assistance devices are allowed, provided they are factory-installed on the vehicle.

Evaluation Criteria

You will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Vehicle use
  • Position on the road
  • Overtaking and passing
  • Change of direction
  • Light signals and commands
  • Speed and traffic direction
  • Behavior towards other road users
  • Defensive driving
  • Independent driving

The examiner will ask you to follow an identifiable direction for 10 to 15 minutes, taking into account the GPS instructions or road signs. You must obey traffic signals and the behavior of other road users while mastering the basic skills.

Basic Maneuvers to Perform

Three basic maneuvers must be performed:

  1. Preliminary checks: Precautions, adjustments, systematic and random checks.
  2. Parking/stopping in reverse behind a vehicle.
  3. U-turn in a narrow street.
In Case of Failure

After two successive failures in the practical exam (i.e., two failures in the risk perception test or the public road exam), it is mandatory to complete:

  • 6 hours of practical lessons in an approved driving school.
  • Present the teaching certificate in order to be able to retake the exam. The courses taken before the failures will not be considered.
Exclusion

A candidate caught cheating will be banned from the exam for 1 year, and a candidate who disrupts the exam process will be banned for 6 months.
